OUR STORY
JCL Dorpers is a small family farm that operates on just over 10 acres in the Southern California high desert near the US/Mexico border. We've been raising livestock for over twenty years! Our primary focus for many of those years was the breeding, raising and showing of Nubian Dairy Goats, during which time we also maintained a small flock of mixed breed hair sheep for our own use. As time moved on, we moved on from dairy goats and decided to focus more on the sheep. We sought to improve the quality and production of the hair sheep we kept. After much research we knew Dorpers were the breed for us!
The hardinesss and adaptibility of the Dorper drew us to the breed. With high tolerance to heat and insects, we knew they could survive in the high desert. They are excellent mothers, have high reproduction rates and high feed conversion rates. Shearing and tail docking are not a necessity for this breed. Low maintanence and high production value made them the only choice!
Since we do not have luscious pastures or hundreds of acres of land, we keep a small manageable flock that are fed a diet of high quality grass hays and loose minerals and provided fresh water daily. Grain is only fed to finish commercial lambs, as Dorpers do not require grain on a daily basis or they get fat! All our breeding animals are registered with the ADSBS and all fullblood lambs can be registered, though we do offer unregistered commercial and market lambs throughout the year.
In addition to sheep, we also raise a couple varieties of poultry, pheasant and fowl and offer chicks and juvenile birds for sale. We added Chocolate Turkeys to the flock a couple years ago and have completely fallen in love with the breed. Chocolates are a rare heritage breed of turkey and maintain a critical status with the American Livestock Breed Conservancy. Their full history is not clear however, they were a popular breed in France and the American South during the Pre-Civil War Era. The breed was almost entirely wiped out during the Civil War but has been restored by enthusisits and is once again gaining popularity. These birds are docile, friendly and naturally inquisitive which makes them a pleasure to have on the farm or homestead. They are a large heritage breed and very productive. Hens top out at 18lbs and Toms at 33lbs with dress weights at 14-16lbs and 22-26lbs repsectively. Hens lay from mid February through August. They are abundant layers and good moms. We highly reccomed Chocolates to anyone considering adding a heritage breed Turkey to their farm or homestead!
